About Hackney Colliery Band: Explorations

Following their genre-defying audiovisual Barbican Hall show in 2019, ’one of the greatest live bands that we have in this country’ (BBC Radio 2) returns to Wilton’s. Wilton’s Associate Artist Steve Pretty is bandleader of Hackney Colliery Band and a composer, performer and broadcaster. For this week-long residency, he and his HCB colleagues curate a diverse mix of music, performance, chat and more. Given HCB’s legendary collaborations with artists including Grammy-winner Angélique Kidjo and godfather of Ethiopian jazz Mulatu Astatke, not to mention homegrown talents including Amy Winehouse, Madness, Jamie Cullum and even the Royal Ballet, expect some brand new collaborations from the band described by BBC Radio 2 as ‘one of the greatest live bands that we have in this country’. And with Steve’s solo work taking in work as Musical Director for Brian Cox and Robin Ince, a double act with BBC Sky at Night presenter Professor Chris Lintott and radio and podcast work with comedian Marcus Brigstocke, combined with his innovative use of music technology for his previous Wilton’s solo show ‘Origin of the Pieces’, this week will be full of surprises and unique happenings. With further details released in the run up to the week, be sure to book early to avoid disappointment for this collision of great music and performance. Please note that the Saturday matinee is a relaxed, family-friendly performance.
