About Baby, What Blessings

Meet Billie. 19 at the start of the play. Hilariously self aware and hopelessly naïve. She’s at the age where every single new thing she sees causes her to entirely reassess her life. And the largest thing to happen is Amal. Baby, What Blessings follows the trajectory of a relationship between a white woman and a black man throughout their student years. In the aftermath of first love we find Billie at a crucial moment of growing up; a moment of grappling with honesty and responsibility, and confronting her own naïvety. The play asks how far we are bound by our personal realities, and what listening really means. A coming of age tale with a twist, we hope it will be a contribution to discussions surrounding ‘the smooth slick confused racism of liberal[s]’ (Selina Thompson).
