“We wrestle. We spit. We are burning. We’re raging and no dear, we won’t calm down”

Overview

We want to take anger, pull it apart and dissect it on stage. We want to get under the skin of the complexities of female rage to ask: what happens in the moments before we explode?

Six Attempts To Swallow A Scream is a devised piece interrogating dominant perceptions of female rage. Anger is a stigmatised emotion, but female anger is delegitimized. We want to unpack why this is, what the experience of female anger is and why discussions around it are so often brushed under the carpet. When can we show anger? What does it look like? Is anger a catalyst or consequence? If anger and I walked into a bar, what would we say to each other?

We work in a DIY aesthetic with poetry, song and movement. We use ensemble-led processes to unpack wider questions about the world and our experience of it. We believe the discussion on female rage is prominent and necessary and want to use theatre as a form to interrogate and explore this emotion in a live performance context. It will be messy, playful and political.
