A thought-provoking depiction of life with Motor Neurone Disease

Overview

A theatrical investigation into Motor Neurone Disease based on the inspiring true story of Sarah Ezekiel.

Blending elements of verbatim theatre, physical theatre, sound art and digital projection, Thought to Flesh brings to light new research from the UCL Institute of neuroscience.

Diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, Alice is slowly losing her mobile capability. The trauma leads her once loving partner to become physically abusive. Eventually unable to speak her desires or wishes, Alice is fully physically disempowered and suffers from the isolation of being caught in an inexorably diminishing world. Despite severe depression and growing frustration, Alice never looses hope. Her resilience and courage guide her towards new ways of communicating through her love for the arts. Learning to draw and paint with her eyes, Alice explores the beauty around her and devotes newfound energy to helping other MND sufferers.

Using symbolic imagery to express Alice’s experience and the science of MND, Thought to Flesh reveals hidden worlds that lie beneath the surface of a body experiencing extreme circumstances.

Birds of Passage, brings together London-based artists to collaborate with world-class medical professionals in order to understand and translate the emotional and physical journey of MND into engaging theatre.

The project cuts to the heart of a neglected community and gives it a voice in society. Working closely with Sarah and others affected by MND, the Company presents theatre that is authentic, educational and engaging.

Today 5,000 people in the UK suffer from MND. Sarah Ezekiel continues to help them.
