About i ride in colour and soft focus, no longer anywhere

Prioritising noise over silence, now over yesterday and pleasure over doing it right. Last Yearz Interesting Negro (LYIN) - the performance project of artist and dancer Jamila Johnson-Small - creates work that exists in-between. A dance, a trance, an atmosphere, i ride in colour and soft focus, no longer anywhere (2017) is an interdisciplinary landscape composed between city streets, heavy beats and personal grief. Through small dances, video and a big sound system, LYIN moves with, against and around responsibilities of blackness and queerness, the pressure to ‘take space’ and the feeling of being possessed by other people’s fantasies. The work features original compositions by Josh Anio Grigg, Junior XL, Nkisi, Shelley Parker and Young Nettle. Co-presented with Chisenhale Dance and supported by Arts Council England. Commissioned by Fierce Festival and The Marlborough Pub and Theatre.
