Long before Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry V appeared in the First Folio, they were published in quarto versions in 1600 and 1602. Today these early editions are known as ‘bad quartos’ because they are shorter than the text in the First Folio – over 1,000 lines shorter. In his popular annual talk, John Wolfson will discuss the differences between the quarto and folio editions of these plays, and the reasons the earlier versions are so much shorter. John Wolfson will be supported by two Globe actors.
