I don’t know the company, so this pick is a bit of an outlier, but Here Now Ensemble’s version of Ibsen’s drama relocates it to 21st century London. The Playground sits in the shadow of Grenfell Tower so a play about what happens when profit is put before people and politicians are unaccountable could be particularly charged in this location. The play and its whistle-blowing anti-hero are hugely adaptable to any time but maybe Enemy of the People is a drama for our time in particular.
This thrilling, energetic, and fresh new version of Henrik Ibsen’s fierce political masterpiece is updated for the here and now. Grenfell should have changed everything. But nothing ever changes. No more waiting. No more hoping. No more letting ourselves be distracted. Break and enter. Put untruth back in its place. Believe in what really makes sense. Do what’s right. Force our way into the present. Then the future. Try. Fail this time. Try again. Fail better. Persist. Attack. Build. Keep on going. Maybe one day we’ll win. But every day, a step forward. Start. Now. Be the change. Book now. Age Recommendation: 14+
