Samuel Goldenberg (1886-1945) was one of the Yiddish theatre’s leading dramatic actors during the 1920s and 1930s. While he relied extensively on the standard melodramatic repertoire, he also made some bold dramatic choices. One such was the gender-bending play “Yes a Man, and Not a Man,” which he staged at the Pavilion Theatre (Whitechapel), during his visits to London in 1931 and 1932. Goldenberg and the Yiddish theatrical repertoire are the focus of this talk. Zachary M. Baker served as the Reinhard Curator of Judaica and Hebraica Collections in the Stanford University Libraries (California) from 1999 until he retired in 2018. Prior to that, he was Head Librarian of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research (New York, 1987-1999). He is a specialist in Yiddish bibliography, and his current research focus is the Yiddish theatre during the 1920s and 1930s.
