My Brilliant Friend: Love, Honour, Jealousy and Marriage in Italy

My Brilliant Friend: Love, Honour, Jealousy and Marriage in Italy

National Theatre · 08 JAN - 08 JAN

Niamh Cullen’s talk will draw on diaries, memoirs, mass media sources and crime reportage in order to reconstruct this ‘intimate history’ of post war Italy.

Overview

Italian society underwent rapid and dramatic change during the ‘economic miracle’ of the 1950s and 1960s; migration from rural to urban Italy, Americanization and the growth of consumer society transformed the lives of Italian men and women. While the films of the era told stories of glamour and romance, the reality was that for most young Italians, love was still tempered by practical and family considerations, while the darker feelings of jealousy and honour still affected many experiences of courtship and marriage, especially - although not only — in the south.
