The Bay at Nice

The Bay at Nice

Menier Chocolate Factory · 14 MAR - 04 MAY

In Leningrad in 1956, Valentina Nrovka has been invited to the Hermitage to offer her opinion on the authenticity of a Matisse painting, as she knew the great artist personally.

Overview

Her daughter Sophia, also a painter, meets her there to seek her mother’s help, both financially and politically. This first London revival of David Hare’s play since its premier at the National Theatre in 1986 explores a mother and daughter’s fight for personal ideals and domestic responsibilities, as well as the choices made both in life and art.

Critic reviews

It's not a revival that is going to shake anyone's view of theatre or of Hare's output. But it is a quiet pleasure, a shining little joy

WhatsOnStage

Enigmatic Penelope Wilton delights in this thin and dry play

Evening Standard

Richard Eyre’s production, elegantly designed by Fotini Dimou, is spacious, unhurried and text-driven

The Guardian

Beautifully designed revival of David Hare’s play with a superb performance from Penelope Wilton

The Stage

Penelope Wilton, one of our very finest actors whose poise, control and reserve are an enduring thing of wonder

London Theatre

There's an irony that so densely written a play is most moving once the words fall away

The Arts Desk

There are so many questions left hanging in this production, which at times is a bit of a snooze

The Times

David Hare’s Leningrad-set drama is a laborious play of ideas

Time Out

An artful but uneventful chamber piece saved by super performances
