Coulrophobia is an intense fear of clowns and apparently it is on the rise – perhaps because of the popularity of movies like the Joker that associate clown faces with horror and murderous rampages. But don’t let that put you off this show created by Opposable Thumb, a new company run by Dik Downey who was one half of the excellent Pickled Image. Directed by Peepolykus’ John Nicholson, the piece follows two clowns in search of freedom from their cardboard world and who long for a more meaningful existence. The show comes with a caveat that rather tickled my fancy. “Warning: Coulrophobia contains disappointing nudity and some words more appropriate to those aged 14+”

About Coulrophobia

Coulrophobia – the fear of clowns – is 80 minutes of brilliant slapstick, mime, puppetry, existential angst and big shoes. Our heroes are Dik & Adam, two clowns in search of freedom from a bewildering cardboard world. Join them in their desperate quest for a more meaningful existence. With enough subversive humour to please the most hardened cynic, Coulrophobia glides seamlessly from sinister to touching, from ridiculous to outright hilarious. Coulrophobia was made in 2014 at Nordland Visual Theatre, Norway, and has featured at many of Europe’s leading clown and puppetry festivals. Age Recommendation: 14+
