If you missed this last time when it was in the West End pre-pandemic, then make sure you are not the loser this time round. Martin Crimp’s new rap-inspired version is genuinely inspired as it retells the story of the soldier poet with the huge hooter. Only here he doesn’t have one. It’s not just the script that seems so fresh but a production that strips everything back to the bone and in the process not only makes Edmond Rostand’s much revived theatrical chestnut seem new-minted, but which also makes it sharply contemporary and finds psychological truths buried under the comedy. James McAvoy is just dazzling as the love-bedazzled man who thinks himself too ugly to be loved.

About Cyrano de Bergerac

After a blazingly successful run in 2019, Cyrano de Bergerac is back in the West End for a limited five week stint with its big star James McAvoy intact. And it's a seriously exciting prospect for theatre fans. Director Jamie Lloyd, known for his radical, stylish takes on classic texts, has turned this 1897 French play by Edmond Rostand into a modern verse drama with all the quirky joy of the original, but plenty of 21st century flourishes too. Martin Crimp's adaptation takes inspiration from rap to land plenty of zinging rhyming couplets, ready to make a West End audience chuckle and The plot of Cyrano de Bergerac follows Cyrano, a nobleman who's serving as a soldier in the French army. He's talented at poetry and music, and should be a perfect catch: except for his huge nose, which fills him with self doubt. Especially when it comes to matters of the heart. So he woos Roxane, his distant cousin, with an adorable bashfulness, competing with the handsome Christian for her affections. Cyrano de Bergerac landed some seriously impressive reviews during its last stint on the West End. Time Out's ★★★★ review called it a "ferociously good revival...that totally reclaims, reinvents and reinvigorates" this classic play. Meanwhile, The Guardian's ★★★★ review wrote that "Lloyd’s production makes you see an old play with fresh eyes". Don't miss out on tickets for this hit play as it plays Harold Pinter Theatre in 2022!
