About Happy Families: An opera double bill

‘All happy families are alike. Each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.’ Meet two families and their problems. Buoso Donati’s family’s problems are death and wealth. Namely that he’s dead and they’re not seeing any of the money. When a shady stranger, Gianni Schicchi, arrives with a plan to bring him back to life and change the will, it seems like the perfect quick fix. But, surprise surprise, things just aren’t that simple. Sit tight for a rowdy, madcap tale with an endlessly inventive score from Puccini. Teresa and her husband have problems of a different kind. She wants freedom, autonomy and to be able to do all the things men can do. He wants her to have babies. She wants to conquer the universe and rally women to her cause. He wants her to have babies. Cue a journey of ‘high-spirited topsy-turveydom’ about children, sexuality and gender that makes as much sense in our world today as it did in Poulenc’s war-torn France. British Youth Opera gives you a chance to see the next generation of opera stars in their first professional-level show, just before they pop up at the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, and the world’s biggest opera houses.
