Inspired by the ’spiral of silence’ theory that suggests people don’t reveal their true opinions for fear of being ostracised, ’Cecilia’ uses the events of 1963 to reflect on a seismic shift in World Politics. On November 22nd, the feast of Saint Cecilia, Mr.Pope, a Bermondsey landlord and discrete enforcer from the London underworld is given the task of returning a Nun to her mission in Paris before Police arrest her. Sympathetic to the indiscretions of his tenants, high prices are paid for the protection afforded to ’undesirables’ looked after by Pope. Mr.Pope knows their secrets. The angelic ‘Sister Cecilia’ extracts their confessions too but technology is moving fast and a new direct telephone line to Paris means the mission is frantically awaiting her return. With her mental state now bordering on psychosis Cecilia’s visions of men in towers and cars parading through cities as gunfire rages evolve into a shocking confession that leaves Pope with an ethical dilemma he is unprepared for....
