Challenging the assumption of the unconditional bond between mother and child, the play is still tragically relevant today. Medea’s motivation to punish her husband’s infidelity, whilst shocking, bears an unsettling resemblance to recent research on maternal filicide. Medea transforms emotionally from suicidal despair to bitter destructiveness. The vulnerability of the character is also given life and we see the tragic result of a woman shunned by a society where she is seen as a cunning foreigner.
