WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? Barbara Brownskirt. is a poetry comedy show. Funny, thought-provoking and at times unsettling, the show charts the highs and lows of Barbara’s life as an unsuccessful lesbian poet in 21st Century Britain.
Overview
We first meet Barbara Brownskirt, explaining how her epic poem, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? Barbara Brownskirt. is yet unfinished. But, as she drags on her 22 volumes of poetry, the audience quickly understand that there is more than enough material for an all-nighter poetry session.
Battling the patriarchy and how it silences the world of menstruation, demonising women, giving rise to elitism, Barbara (unknowingly) takes the language of feminism and lesbian cliché and creates comedy and pathos. Themes such as loneliness, the Dunning-Kruger effect in art (where persons of low ability suffer from illusory superiority), Freudian mother love, lesbian cliché and the love of Judi Dench run throughout.
