Kitchener + Waterloo is a storytelling show, a series of ugly portraits of my hometown, Kitchener-Waterloo, a place I’ve always been embarrassed by but now wish I didn’t hate.
Weaving together stories of real people from KW (some true, some lies, some memories and some imagined futures) at various points of crisis and triumph in their lives:
Neesh shot Radine in the head, through her pig-ear wooly hat, and left her body in a snow bank. Neesh is charged with a life sentence after an elaborate KW Police sting operation. Berry becomes obsessed with volunteering for KW Counseling while his wife takes herself to chemo her appointments. Two 10-year-old girls, start a “we want penises club” and create foam penises and balls, put them in their underpants, write a constitution and practice kissing behind the furnace. There is scandal at the Miss Oktoberfest Pageant when it’s discovered the winner doesn’t have German blood. Judy’s mother makes costumes for strippers; Santos mother returned to her old-order Mennonite roots and dissembled all their major appliances. But that was last winter. Now Judy and Santos find themselves the only non-Bosnian speakers in a group home on Elizabeth Street and fall in love by default.
