A unique, genre-defying collaboration between award-winning musicians Lauren Gilmour and Audrey Tait and playwright Belle Jones, Closed Doors mixes spoken word and music to weave together the stories of several residents of a troubled and divided urban neighbourhood.

Overview

Thrown together as their block of flats is evacuated during a police operation, three very different matriarchs speculate as to the incident’s cause. In doing so, their prejudices rise to the surface and are challenged, just as their similarities become apparent.

Inspired by the vibrant yet notorious district of Govanhill, Glasgow, the show explores how disparate communities live literally on top of one another in multicultural Scotland. It examines how someone can feel like a stranger in the society they were born into, and how others can find homes in a country far from the land where they grew up.

Blending soaring vocals with theatrical verse, and catchy piano melodies underscored by exhilarating drums, Closed Doors looks at identity, heritage, community and isolation. Bringing together three of Scotland’s most exciting female artists, the show is part character study, part social commentary and built on a foundation of mesmerising sound.
