A story of love, war and injustice

Overview

Windrush Square was first developed during our Theatres Company final year of university in preparation for our Graduate Showcase. Our stimulus was the phrase ‘We come from far away’. When exploring our own cultural identity, we discovered all of us had one thing in common – we are third-generation migrants. Although we all identify ourselves as British, we wanted to discover more about who we are, where we came from and how we settled into the land we now call home.

When talking to our parents, it led us to the vibrant district of Brixton. It was then we began to hear heart-breaking stories we’d never heard before, memories that were buried away and significant moments in British history not being taught in schools.Upon visiting the area, we visited the Black Cultural archives, read newspaper articles and we met with local residents who shared their experiences with us and one story stood out in particular; following an interracial relationship and the hardships that impacted it during a time of heightened racial tension.

At the centre of our story, you meet the Johnson family made up of 3 generations of Jamaican descent. Every character has a different insight into what’s going on in the world around them. The themes include race, the relationship between the police and the community, masculinity, Thatcherism and love. All based on true accounts, we follow each individual character on a quest for equality and respect.

Filled with a Reggae-Fueled Soundtrack, Dance and Movement. We Monument Theatre Company Present to you Windrush Square.
