Kaspar and the Sea of Houses

Directed by Michael Wade. Starringl Franziska Morai * Michaela Leslie * Fiona-Maria Karagiannidou

Overview

"OH, FOR GOD'S SAKE, GET UP, YOU SHRIEKING LITTLE HORROR!"

"O.K. GO ON, KEEP SMASHING YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE WALL!"

"THIS IS AN EMERGENCY – I'M CALLING SOCIAL SERVICES!"

Three social workers. Three women drowning in their refusal to admit defeat at the cost of their own sanity.

IN 2006,
A CASE OF CHILD NEGLECT WAS MADE PUBLIC IN THE GERMAN PRESS. TWO YEAR OLD KEVIN WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS STEPFATHER’S HOUSE, HIDDEN IN THE FRIDGE. THE FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER ASSIGNED TO THE BOY WORKED ON ANOTHER 240 CASES ON AVERAGE. KEVIN SIMPLY SLIPPED THROUGH THE CRACKS.

PLAYWRIGHT FELICIA ZELLER BASED HER PLAY ON KEVIN’S STORY. SHE IS SHOWING THE TRAGIC REALITY AND THE POWERLESSNESS OF THOSE IN CHARGE OF VULNERABLE CHILDREN. WRITTEN FROM THE PERSPECTIVES OF THREE FAMILY SUPPORT WORKERS, THE PLAY GIVES INSIGHT INTO THEIR FIGHT AGAINST THE CONSTANT THREAT OF FAILURE. IN THE UK, BABY PETE REMINDS US OF A SIMILAR BRUTAL CASE...

VANGUARD THEATRE PRODUCTIONS ARE SHOWING ‘KASPAR AND THE SEA OF HOUSES’ FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. IT IS OUR AIM TO RAISE AWARENESS TO THIS SUBJECT AND ITS PREVALENCE.
