Toneelgroep Amsterdam: Kings of War
How to survive in a world where fighting and ambition are expected? Is it still allowed to be vulnerable? Do feelings still have a place in our society anyway? Together with our fixed ensemble, directors from the Netherlands, Australia, Belgium and America examine these crucial questions and dilemmas in 15|16.
Overview
Three rulers in times of crisis, each faced with the life-or-death choice of whether to go to war. Their decision-making is laid bare, exposing the conflict between national concerns and self-interest.
Shakespeare's Henry V, Henry VI and Richard III become modern-day political leaders, all their fates unfolding in this single, radical adaptation. Pulling us behind the scenes into labyrinthine war rooms, the explosive play strikes a chord with global events we see on the news everyday.
Olivier Award-winning Ivo van Hove follows his most recent hits, Antigone and A View from the Bridge, by directing a work of the same impact as his ground-breaking Roman Tragedies, seen here in 2009.
