I saw an early version of this piece at Soho Theatre back in 2016 and it has stayed with me. The premise is simple: the self-selected participants get an opportunity to step onto a soap box and speak about who has power over them and what they want to say to those people or that institution. It is surprisingly theatrical, sometimes moving, full of passion and always galvanising in the way that it blurs the boundaries between the personal and the political. Next Saturday’s performance streams live from Montgomery College in Maryland just a month before the US election, and future sessions will be streamed from venues around the UK and as far afield as Singapore.
Migguel Anggelo’s visionary new stage work English with an Accent is the catalyst for an online transatlantic meditation on time, place, and community. On the eve of the US elections, this one-of-a-kind streaming event includes up to 10 community participants cast from within a dozen miles of the White House.
