About The Shows Must Go On: By Jeeves

Directed by Alan Ayckbourn, the film version of By Jeeves was released in October 2001. It starred Martin Jarvis as Jeeves, John Scherer as Wooster and many other members of the cast of the Helen Hayes Theatre production of the show who opened on Broadway, also in 2001. Based on the beloved P.G Wodehouse stories of Bertie Wooster and his butler Jeeves, the film version of By Jeeves was based on the 1996 Scarborough and London production also directed by Ayckbourn. The show is a contemporary reworking of the 1975 Andrew Lloyd Webber/Alan Ayckbourn musical production, entitled Jeeves. When Bertie’s banjo mysteriously disappears just as he is about to give a concert in a church hall, the unflappable Jeeves suggests that he entertain his audience by relating the hapless romantic misadventures of his circle of high-society London cronies. With members of the audience playing the roles of Bertie’s friends onstage and Jeeves serving as writer, composer, director and props master, an impromptu theatrical extravaganza unfolds… The film features thirteen songs composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Alan Ayckbourn.
