Back and available to view via the BOV website from Friday, Bristol Old Vic’s 2016 ghoulish musical, inspired by Victor Hugo’s L’Homme qui Rit, will be available on demand over the Christmas period. It is so distinctive and so deliciously weird it is well worth your time. Transposing Hugo’s story of Gwynplaine, whose face was mutilated in childhood leaving him with a rictus grin, to 18th century England, this is an evening that is visually lush and musically inventive. Full marks to composer Marc Teitler who is also behind the RSC’s The Magician’s Elephant has been postponed until next year. Director Tom Morris succeeds in making an evening which is macabrely magnificent.

About The Grinning Man

A strange new act has arrived at the fairground. Who is Grinpayne and how did he get his hideous smile? Helped by an old man, a lone wolf and a blind girl, his story must be told. The epic tale of an abandoned child with a terrible secret. A disfigured youth who is desperate to hide and a sightless girl who longs to be discovered. Let the darkness seduce you. Following a triumphant premiere as part of our 250th Anniversary season, and it's acclaimed run at Trafalgar Studios in London's West End, we are delighted that The Grinning Man has returned, and this time we are bringing the fairground straight to your house.
