“Roy Alexander Weise directed Gbolahan Obisesan and Ronke Adekoluejo in a revival of Katori Hall’s play, set in a hotel on the eve of Martin Luther King’s assassination at the Young Vic in 2016. Now the co-artistic director of the Royal Exchange in Manchester, Weise and the cast are reunited for a reading streamed on the Exchange’s YouTube channel. It's a play in which King encounters a hotel maid on the last night of his life. The black American playwright Katori Hall, who wrote the brilliant Our Lady of Kibeho and the Tina Turner musical, was raised in Memphis, close to where King was shot. Her playful two-hander asks whether, in the decades following the assassination of King black Americans really have reached the mountaintop, or merely got stuck halfway up?”
“An intimate fictional look at the eve of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A new digital reading of this important play to raise funds to support the legal costs incurred by those incarcerated whilst protesting.”
