“Sally Cookson’s take on Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel is a marathon, not a sprint but you only have until April 16th to watch this hugely inventive show that began life at Bristol Old Vic and went onto the National twice - as well as touring the country. It does exactly what you want a page to stage adaptation to do: make you see the novel in a fresh light and send you scurrying back to the original to re-read. It’s a distinctly feminist take and all the better for it. It boasts a terrific ensemble headed up by Madelaine Worrell who gives a performance of unpretentious generosity that captures Jane’s mix of intelligence and feeling, and her ache for something more than her life offers her.”
“This bold and innovative reimagining of Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece uncovers one woman’s fight for freedom and fulfilment on her own terms.”

Critic reviews

It will make you rethink the novel as a great love story, if that is how you saw it. Cookson makes us see it through feminist eyes and repositions Jane not as a woman looking for love but a woman looking for justice and fulfilment.
