Sally Cookson’s take on Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel is a marathon, not a sprint but you only have until April 16th to watch this hugely inventive show that began life at Bristol Old Vic and went onto the National twice - as well as touring the country. It does exactly what you want a page to stage adaptation to do: make you see the novel in a fresh light and send you scurrying back to the original to re-read. It’s a distinctly feminist take and all the better for it. It boasts a terrific ensemble headed up by Madelaine Worrell who gives a performance of unpretentious generosity that captures Jane’s mix of intelligence and feeling, and her ache for something more than her life offers her.
