One of the UK’s constantly surprising companies, the Birmingham based Stan’s Café are great experimenters with form and have produced some brilliant work including the rice-based installation Of All the People in All the World. Now the company has turned itself into Stan’s Internet Café inviting audiences to sample a new on-line play inspired by call centres across the globe and the workers trying to handle customer queries often without the training or expertise to do so. But cheeriness can get you a long way, can’t it?
Directed by Artistic Director, James Yarker and devised with the company, For Quality Purposes is set in a Dispersed Universal Call Centre where call handlers, working from home, field enquiries from customers with a vast range of queries in areas they are rarely trained for or qualified to deal with. Our heroes are often left floundering but cheeriness is their default setting. Funny, touching and thoughtful, this play is made especially to be performed online.
