New from Extant, Flight Paths is a multimedia production inspired by the Goze, the blind female performers of medieval Japan, that provides an interactive online experience featuring stories of travel, blindness and migration. Extant, which means the opposite of extinct, was founded in 1997 by visually impaired performers, and has gone on to create some boundary-pushing work that redefines how we experience theatre. Originally produced in 2019 with Yellow Earth this is a show that is layered in many ways and uses aerial performance, projections and audio description to create interweaving narratives and a different kind of storytelling.
Flight Paths, our epic multimedia production inspired by the Goze – blind female performers of medieval Japan – is brought to life on screen for the first time in a new digital retelling, co-commissioned by The Space. Combining animation, aerial movement and creative audio description, Flight Paths is an interactive online experience featuring stories of travel, blindness and migration. Through interactive navigation by the Goze, viewers will journey through a unique, multi-sensory experience of Japanese cultural history and storytelling.
