“One of the pleasures of digital work is that it connects across the world and can be accessed from anywhere as long as you have a good internet connection. That feels particularly appropriate for Tania El Khoury’s piece, created with Basel Zaraa, that tells of the experience of being a refugee, travelling across Europe and of a family pulled apart. This is a show that travels. I saw the show in its physical form, As Far as My Fingertips Take me, at the In Between Time festival in 2017 and this month the digital version is hosted by NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Centre but courtesty of Zoom can be experienced wherever you are in the world. Presented as a one-on-one experience this is a story about a man marked by experience that finds a cunning way to ensure his story marks you too.”

Overview

Through touch, sound, and interactivity As Far As Isolation Goes (online) brings audience members in contact with those who have been faced with the inhumanities of detention centres and a mental health system that disregards their political and emotional contexts.

The work is a collaboration between live artist Tania El Khoury and musician and street artist Basel Zaraa. Reimagined for an online experience during physical distancing, the piece is a 1-on-1 virtual intimate experience.

Built from their original collaboration, As Far As My Fingertips Take Me, El Khoury commissioned Zaraa to record a rap song inspired by the journey his sisters made from Damascus to Sweden. This online iteration focuses on mental and physical health experiences of refugees in the United Kingdom. Zaraa created a song inspired by conversations with friends and colleagues who have recently claimed refuge in the UK.
