Overview

Minnie has big ambitions for her new marriage to Luther Gascoyne, but Luther’s mother Mrs Gascoyne has ideas of her own.

When she discovers explosive news about one of Luther’s old flames, Mrs Gascoyne shakes the foundations of her daughter-in-law’s new life, and lays the battle-lines for an emotional struggle that could tear the whole family apart.

Set in the heat of the 1912 miners’ strike, The Daughter-in-Law is a searing and unforgettable drama about heartache, inequality and the ties that bind.

D H Lawrence’s groundbreaking play receives its first London staging in over 15 years.

“It is quite extraordinary … one of the great British dramas of the 20th century” – Michael Billington, The Guardian

Critic reviews

A play in which sex, class and industrial politics are effortlessly intertwined

The Guardian

Nunn displays an effortlessly impressive emotional range and an airy sensuality in the title role

WhatsOnStage

Evocative in-the-round revival of DH Lawrence’s play of marriages and mothers

The Stage

There are certainly worse plays that are revived simply because they’re famous, and so it seems sort of unfair to insist that this revival needs extra justification just because it’s not

Exeunt

There's passion aplenty, the sting of authenticity in accents and dialect and the kind of dialogue one would expect from a writer with Lawrence's reputation
