The worldwide best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger 'The Time Traveller’s Wife' is thrillingly brought to life in a new British musical, set to premiere in London at the West End's Apollo Theatre in October 2023, following performances at Chester Storyhouse. The London premiere of The Time Traveller’s Wife musical is brought to life on stage by a killer creative team. Original music and lyrics from Grammy Award winners Joss Stone and Dave Stewart, adaptation by multi award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson, staged by acclaimed British director Bill Buckhurst (Sweeney Todd), and produced by the team behind Back To The Future: The Musical and Ghost. The story follows Henry and Clare's relationship. It's like no other. And yet, it is like all others. Henry is a time traveller and Clare is a talented sculptor. They meet, fall in love, and marry – but not in that order. Even though time keeps them apart, they are united by love. “Their love story is like no other. And yet, it’s like all others. They meet, fall in love, and marry – but not in that order.” Based on the award-winning novel by Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveller’s Wife: The Musical makes its West End debut this year, following a successful run at Storyhouse Chester.
The Time Traveller’s Wife tells the tale of Henry and Clare, an average couple in all ways but one: Henry has a genetic disorder that causes him to uncontrollably time travel. As their timelines weave in and out of each other, this ordinary couple has to learn how to cope with their extraordinary situation.
The company describes the show as “a heart-racing and devastatingly gorgeous theatrical journey like no other.”
Drawing on both the novel and the screenplay from the 2009 film, starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, The Time Traveller’s Wife theatre adaptation features original music and lyrics by the Grammy award-winning Joss Stone and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. “We have been on many crazy adventures together but we’ve never ‘time travelled’ ‘til meeting Lauren Gunderson,” the pair says of the show. “Writing these songs together whilst being in different locations on different time zones has been a trip (literally), throwing us into an eddy of emotive melodies and heart-wrenching lyrics to go with the push and pull of this unusual love story.”
The tale has been adapted for the stage by Lauren Gunderson, who says of the process: “I will never forget reading the last chapter of Audrey Niffenegger’s book over ten years ago and being floored by its thunderous emotion and potent humanity. I knew this love story belonged on stage with music and vision that matches its emotional punch and soaring feeling. I know this musical will lift, delight, hearten, and exhilarate.”
Talented musician David Hunter, of the pop rock band Reemer, plays the role of Henry, following on from star turns in Waitress, Kinky Boots, and Once: The Musical. Star of Pretty Woman: The Musical, and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Joanna Woodward, takes on the role of Clare.
Colin Ingram of InTheatre Productions (Grease, Back to the Future: The Musical, Ghost) produces, while the stellar cast is helmed by Bill Buckhurst, the award-winning director of Sister Act: The Musical and Sweeney Todd.
The creative team also includes design by Anna Fleischle, choreography by Shelley Maxwell, lighting design by Lucy Carter, illusions by Chris Fisher, video design by Andrjez Goulding, sound design by Richard Brooker, musical supervision and arrangement by Nick Finlow, and orchestrations by Bryan Crook.
