“A number of years back the Almeida had a big hit with a stage version of Thomas Vinterberg’s ‘Festen’ about a family tearing it self about. Now another of Vinterberg’s movies, this one dating from 2012, makes it to the stage. This one tells the story of a kindergarten teacher who is wrongly accused of sexually abusing a child in his class. Tobias Menzies stars in a piece directed by Rupert Goold and which is adapted for the stage by David Farr whose TV hits include ‘The Night Manager’.”

Overview

We are a small community. The happiness of our children is everything. Our hopes and dreams rest in these tiny souls.

In a small town in northern Denmark, the children celebrate Harvest Festival.

In the forest by the water the men of the lodge stand naked in the cold. This is their country. This is their song.

In the shadows a lonely child gives a strange man her heart.

The hunt begins.

Critic reviews

It's a gripping, unsettling evening - not easy to watch, but impossible to look away from

London Theatre

Tobias Menzies paints a devastating portrait of a victim of mass hysteria

Evening Standard

That examination of human fallibility, of the flaws that make us who we are, of the complicated emotions that drive and control society makes The Hunt a very fine piece of work indeed

WhatsOnStage

Taya Tower shines as the ultra-sensitive Clara. Tousle-haired George Nearn Stuart, as her cheeky fellow pupil Peter, melted hearts

The Times

I still feel this is a piece that works best through the detailed literalness of cinema

The Guardian

Complex, harrowing and unmissable stage adaptation of a Danish film about a teacher accused of abusing a child

The Stage

David Farr’s sharp, pared down version of Thomas Vinterberg’s 2012 movie, Jagten, which gets a swaggeringly atmospheric staging from Rupert Goold

Lyn Gardner for Stagedoor

A slick but uncomfortable narrative of male innocence

Exeunt

Tobias Menzies is wonderful as a schoolteacher accused of child abuse in this adaptation of Thomas Vinterberg’s thriller

Time Out

A world-class adaptation of a dark Danish parable
